What Could You Catch?
Skate
The common Skate, also known as the Flapper Skate, is a formidable species that inhabits the waters of Loch Linnhe. This large ray species is renowned for its impressive size and strength.
The common Skate is characterised by its broad wingspan and distinctive markings. It is capable of reaching weights of over 150 pounds, making it one of the largest skate species in the world.
Anglers are often awestruck by the sheer size and power of the common skate. Catching one of these majestic creatures is a memorable experience that requires patience, skill, and determination.
Fishing from our Jola IV vessel in deep waters affords you the opportunity to encounter these giants.
Thornback Rays
Thornback Rays are a popular target for anglers due to their abundance in Loch Linnhe and their reputation as strong fighters.
They prefer shallow coastal habitats with sandy or muddy substrates, where they can bury themselves partially to ambush unsuspecting prey.
During the summer months, Thornback Rays may migrate to shallower waters to breed, with females typically giving birth to live young in shallow nursery areas.
Anglers typically target thornback rays using bottom fishing techniques, deploying baited rigs with Squid, Mackerel, or Shellfish as bait.
In addition to Skate and Thornback Rays, Loch Linnhe offers opportunities to catch a variety of other species, including:
-
Spur Dogs
-
Conger Eels
-
Pollack
-
Whiting
-
Mackerel
-
Gurnard
-
Dogfish
These species provide anglers with a diverse range of fishing experiences, from battling with powerful Rays to reeling in feisty Eels and Pollack.
